About CNY Splash

A student-founded nonprofit built on one belief: every child deserves to feel safe in the water.

CNY Splash was founded by students at Fayetteville-Manlius High School who wanted to turn their own experience in the water into an opportunity for others. Our instructors are certified Water Safety Instructors and lifeguards who volunteer their time to teach children fundamental swim skills, water confidence, and drowning-prevention awareness.

Every lesson we offer is 100% free. There are no hidden fees, no equipment requirements, and no barriers to entry — just a welcoming pool deck and instructors who genuinely love what they do.

Our Story

Why a group of high schoolers started a swim school

CNY Splash began with a group of Fayetteville-Manlius student-athletes — competitive swimmers, lifeguards, and Water Safety Instructors — who noticed something they didn't want to take for granted: growing up with access to lakes, pools, and swim programs had shaped who they were. It gave them confidence, discipline, and in some cases, a sport they loved for life.

They also knew that not every child in Central New York has that same access. Some families face cost barriers to swim lessons; others simply don't know where to start. Our founders — multi-sport athletes balancing swim team, scuba diving, tennis, music, and academic competition alongside this nonprofit — decided to close that gap themselves.

What started as a shared conversation about giving back became CNY Splash: a nonprofit run entirely by students, offering the same high-quality, safety-first swim instruction that shaped their own lives — free, and open to any child in our community.

"Every child deserves the chance to feel safe and confident in the water — regardless of their family's circumstances."
Lesson Types

A lesson track for every young swimmer

From first-time water exposure to independent strokes, every CNY Splash class is taught by a certified instructor and built around safety, patience, and fun.

First-time swimmers

Little Splashers

Our gentlest introduction to the water. Little Splashers builds comfort and trust through playful, guided activities — helping young children overcome fear of the water while learning to float, blow bubbles, and kick with support. Drawing on American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Levels 1–2, children also practice safely entering and exiting the water, submerging their mouth, nose, and eyes, opening their eyes underwater to retrieve objects, and gliding independently on both front and back — building the foundation for lifelong water safety, one playful lesson at a time.

Red Cross WSI LTS Levels 1–2
  • Enter and exit the water safely and confidently
  • Float, blow bubbles, and kick with instructor support
  • Submerge mouth, nose, and eyes
  • Open eyes underwater and retrieve objects
  • Glide and roll between front and back floats

Building independence

Rising Swimmers

Designed for children ready to move beyond the basics, Rising Swimmers focuses on independent floating, freestyle and backstroke fundamentals, and safe entries and exits. Building on American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 3, students also practice jumping into deep water and recovering unassisted, treading water, sustained survival floating, and an introduction to elementary backstroke and sidestroke — while instructors emphasize self-rescue skills and confidence-building drills so kids leave every lesson a little braver and more capable in the water.

Red Cross WSI LTS Level 3
  • Independent floating and safe entries and exits
  • Freestyle and backstroke fundamentals
  • Jump into deep water and recover unassisted
  • Tread water and sustain a survival float
  • Introduction to elementary backstroke and sidestroke

Refining skill & endurance

Confident Strokes

For older beginners and intermediate swimmers, Confident Strokes hones stroke technique, endurance, and water safety judgment. Bringing together American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Levels 4–5, children refine freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke mechanics alongside butterfly and sidestroke, practice open and flip turns, shallow-angle dives, and extended treading and endurance swims — developing the confidence to swim longer distances safely and independently in open water and pool settings alike.

Red Cross WSI LTS Levels 4–5
  • Refine freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke technique
  • Introduce butterfly and sidestroke
  • Open and flip turns
  • Shallow-angle racing dives
  • Extended treading water and endurance swims
